Rain transforms a city.
On this evening in Istanbul, wet pavement reflected the streetlights while trams, pedestrians and the constant rhythm of the city continued through the weather.
As two figures crossed the tracks in front of me, their movement created a fleeting contrast with the approaching tram and the architecture surrounding them. It was one of those moments that existed for only a fraction of a second—the kind of moment I am always looking for when photographing a city.
I chose black and white to concentrate on the atmosphere: the reflections on the pavement, the network of overhead wires, the movement of the pedestrians and the layers of Istanbul disappearing into the distance.
Crossing Istanbul — A Rainy Evening is not simply a photograph of a place. For me, it is about the energy of a city continuing to move around you, even in the rain.
